Myxomatosis

Sir,—We wish to raise two points following your report of a speech by the Under-Secretary of Agriculture, Mr Butcher, at the Pest Destruction Board conference (July 4). To the numerous citizens in all'walks of life opposed to myxomatosis,it does not matter what animals are to be subjected to torture, the horrifying details of which are by now weir known.. Man-eating tiger or the highly • intelligent rat, our opposition would be just the same. Sneering at human emotions like compassion is fast losing its lustre. Mr Butcher attempts to frighten us by attacking our pockets. We would not mind paying increased taxes in the service of human decency and civilised behaviour. But it should be the responsibility of the few farmers in the relatively small infested areas to pay for control. The grave dangers of myxomatosis have been repeatedly pointed out, in your pages, in the Environmental Impact Report and elsewhere.—Yours, etc. ■■ ■- M. MAYER, NATALIE TAYLOR, ANTOINETTE C. TARLTON. July 7, 1986.
