South Africa
Sir,—Contrary to what Bert Walker claims (July 4), I did in my letter of July 1 attack what he said in his letter of June 28, quoting a whole sentence therefrom. I challenge Bert Walker’s claim that P. Gumede, vicepresident of the (black) National Federated Chamber of Commerce and kwaZulu’s Chief Minister, Chief Mangesuthu Buthelezi, are “the true popular '
leaders of the overwhelming majority of South African blacks.” They have as much claim to such title as the National Party has to represent the New Zealand working class. Aware as I am of my lowly social status, I have, nevertheless, as much authority to ridicule Bert Walker’s claims for his two black, middle-class, apartheid collaborators as he has to make ridiculous claims on their behalf.—Yours, etc., M. CREEL July 6, 1986.
