Flood victims move back into their home

PA Oamaru A young couple have returned to their home in Hakataramea more than three months after it was isolated by raging floodwaters, said a spokesman at the flood recovery office in Kurow.

The bursting of the Hakataramea River on March 13 on to the small township was responsible for the condemning of seven permanent homes and as many as 12 holiday homes.

The couple were among the lucky ones, the spokesman said. Two of the seven houses were deemed unrepairable and

were recently demolished. When the other four homes will be reoccupied is not yet known. They have been dried out but were still receiving material renovations. The spokesman said some people might be back later this month but others might have to wait longer.

All the houses now being repaired had first to be deemed repairable by health and building inspectors. P.E.P. workers had been helping with cleanup work, the spokesman said.
