Smoke detectors ‘a way to save lives’
PA ' Wellington A simple and inexpensive smoke detector installed in homes could save many lives in winter months, says Wellington’s assistant fire commander, Mr Jim Stephens. People were inclined to be complacent and left heaters on and fires burning, he said. An earlywarning device could alert them quickly to potential disaster. Mr Stephens made the comments after attending a house fire in Taita in which a small boy died. The property was owned by the Housing Corpora-
tion. The Assistant DirectorGeneral of Housing, Mr Brian Conroy, said the corporation had not considered installing the devices in its houses, but would do so. But the cost would be substantial if it were to be done in all its 60,000 homes.
He felt it was up to individuals living in the houses to install their own detectors. It was not difficult to do, and most devices could sit on a shelf if not fastened on the wall.
