Auckland-Queenstown air link
The first direct Auck-land-Queenstown air link has been announced by Mount Cook Airline. The new service is expected,/to begin in late October; subject to certain operational requirements. - It was being introduced particularly to cater for 1 the tourist market,’ said the Mount Cook public affairs officer, Ted Beckett’;; ;
There was a growing demand from overseas tour operators to have direct flights in at least one direction between Auckland and Queenstown, he said. “We know the demand is there.” An Air New Zealand 737 jet would be leased to
service the link, giving a flight time of two hours. Because of the Queenstown runway’s shortness, a passenger limit of 106 people to and 90 people from Queenstown had been placed on the flight Mr Beckett said it had not been possible to fly jets into Queenstown before the advent of the latest Air New Zealand 7375. ’ vi/J The new service will be in addition to other Mount Cook HS 748 connections which link Rotorua and Christchurch with Queenstown. It was expected to be of particular benefit to tour operators organising shortstay packages of New Zealand.
