Steeplechasers in good form

NZPA staff correspondent London

The steeplechasers, Michael Gilchrist and Peter Renner, showed some promising form when they prepared for the Commonwealth Games in the mile heats at the British counties championship.

Both named for the 3000 metres steeplechase in New Zealand’s Edinburgh Games team, they led home one heat at Corby while a third Canterbury runner, David Burridge, won another. Gilchrist was first in 4 minutes 3.04 seconds while Renner finished in 4:03.06, Burridge won his

heat in 4:14.07. The New Zealanders were not permitted to compete in the counties finals. The Games middle distance coach, Jack Ralston, said that given the competition he expected the two Christchurch steeplechasers would have gone under four minutes in the final.

Auckland’s Christine Pfitzinger won a 1500 metres event in 4:12.3 while Lower Hutt’s Anne Hare was second in 4:14.4.

An Auckland decathlete, Simon Poelman, ran 11 seconds for the 100 metres in windy conditions.
