Shipment of petrol will ease shortage
PA Wellington A shipment of about 25,000 tonnes of refined petrol is on its way to New Zealand to help ease local shortages at several main centres.
Port storage facilities at most main centres were run right down several months ago because of a fire and industrial problems at the Marsden Point refinery. A spokesman for theMinistry of Energy said the petrol had been obtained in the United States, and was expected to arrive in New Zealand in about two weeks.
He said it was likely the tanker bringing the petrol would sail to Lyttelton and Dunedin to top up port storage facilities there.
This would help ease the burden on New Zealand’s coastal tanker fleet by leaving it to service centres closer to the Marsden Point refinery with a quicker turnround time, he said.
The coastal tanker fleet, now reduced from four vessels to three, has been hard-pressed to keep up with demand, and some centres, including Wellington, have been down to only a few days supply of petrol.
The fourth tanker is undergoing survey at Singapore.
