Gatting appointed
NZPA London Mike Gatting was appointed yesterday to captain England in its three-test series against the touring New Zealand cricket team this northern summer.
The Middlesex batsman took over the captaincy from David Gower after India defeated England in the first test at Lords last month. Gatting’s side lost the second test, but he scored 183 in the third Test now under way at
Edgbaston. Announcing the appointment, Peter May, chairman of the England selectors, said: "The selectors have been most impressed by Mike’s positive approach to the captaincy, both at the crease and on the field, and the way he has responded to the challenge.” He called his first-innings performance at Edgbaston "an authoritative, controlled knock of the highest quality.”
