Plan for big blood bank

NZPA-AFP Washington The United States Defence Department plans to set up one of the world’s biggest blood banks for American servicemen injured overseas in case of war. The military blood programme 2004 has been made possible by longterm freezing techniques developed in a United States Navy laboratory. ,

A stock of 300,000 units of blood will be established by 1992 so that doctors can have enough reserves available outside American territory to treat the first injured in the event of war, said Lieutenant-Colonel Anthony Polk, who is in charge of the project.
