Woman bishop dies
Marjorie Matthews, the first woman elected as a bishop of the United Methodist Church, has died, aged 69. Bishop Matthews was pastor of churches in several Michigan communities before being named superintendent of the Grand Traverse district in 1976, a post she held until her election as Wisconsin bishop. She retired in 1984.—Grand Rapids.
