Airline competition
Sir,—With air travel costing what it does, visiting grandchildren in the North Island is out of reach of most superannuitants who are not prepared to run the gauntlet of being stranded by the rail ferries at Picton or Wellington. If, as the Government is hinting, the Brierley-Newmans-Ansett proposal goes ahead and Air New Zealand may have to retrench, does this really matter? We may see another oldstyle airline, like Mount Cook was, start up and give competition to the new-style Newmans. If Air New Zealand is not prepared to be cost-competitive, treat it like the Railways. Harsh, yes, but these times are hard for a lot of people. — Yours, etc., D. S. HODGKISS. June 27, 1986.
