Welfare system

Sir, —I want to start a movement in New Zealand for the : .reappraisal of the social welfare system, whereby the original concepts, of being destitute by sickness and widowhood

apply. Marriage break-up financed by the State is ridiculous. People just shoulder responsibility on to others, who pay their bills. Under the “user-pays” system also come unwed mothers, and unemployment; they owe the system also with community assistance. Married couples with families are penalised — heavy taxation, no “free keep,” if over $24,000, no Family Care, no $36 under GST — but they pay everyone else’s keep, like the Little Red Hen. Wives work at unthinkable jobs that Mrs Hercus’s unemployed must not do. Children are sent to school ill in order that these jobs are kept. With all these “will nots” added to family backs, no wonder break-downs increase. This is a disastrous, direction. We are a lazy, irresponsible people, encouraged by unrealistic Governments. — Yours, etc.,

K. TAYLOR. June 27, 1986.
