New Ambassador of Philippines to N.Z.
PA Wellington Mr Eduardo Montilla, a career diplomat, has been appointed Ambassador of the Philippines to New Zealand, succeeding to Mr Pacifico Evangelista, who retired earlier this year. Mrs Dolores Sale, Charge d’Affaires at the embassy, said Mr Montilla had a long and distinguished career in the diplomatic service. His appointment underscored the importance the Philippine Government accorded relations with New Zealand. Mr Montilla, aged 61, is
a graduate of Georgetown University, Washington, and the American University, Washington. He began his diplomatic career in 1947 as assistant public-relations attache at the Philippines Embassy in Washington. Since then he has served in Bonn, Madrid, New Delhi, the Vatican, and Caracas where he was Minister-Counsellor from 1981 to 1982. He is at present assistant Minister of Protocol at the foreign ministry in Manila. Mr Montilla is married, with six children.
