Air pollution

Sir,—Why is the domestic hearth fire blamed for much of the winter air pollution in Christchurch? The Sunlight League’s pollution survey of the ,1930 s

found that domestic fires were the main source of smoke. In the 1950 s a D.S.I.R. investigator, Les Wilkinson, confirmed this assessment. The Christchurch Regional Authority’s technical committee assessed the situation for five years and, through D.S.I.R. Report No. 55 of 1966, confirmed that domestic fires were the main cause. During the last 20 years we have consistently attended meetings of the Regional Air Pollution Committee and are aware of the calibre of people working in the technical committees. They assess the official air pollution measurements in a satisfactory and logical way. The policy of setting up clean-air zones should at least benefit future generations. The Canterbury United Council and the City Council are available to assist householders who want to honour their obligations under the 1972 Clean Air Act. —Yours, etc., P. V. NEARY, Hon. secretary, N.Z. Clean Air Society. June 20, 1986.
