Bell’s boxers win

Two amateur boxers from Peter Bell’s gymnasium in Christchurch gained notable victories over Wellington opponents in Wellington last Sunday. Royce Ellis, a light middleweight, not only beat the rugged Brent Vincent, but also earned a trophy for the most scientific competitor in the tournament. Ellis did not have matters all his own way, however. He weathered a flurry of blows from Vincent, and finished just behind on points in the first round. Ellis then slowed

his opponent with forceful body punching and after scoring with several left hooks to Vincent’s head, the referee stopped the bout in the second round. A points victory by Michael Bell over Tala Uliatellia marked a successful comeback of the promising competitor. Also a light middleweight, Bell was making his senior debut in his first fight for four years. Bell won all three rounds against a rival who was seeking to extend an impressive sequence of victories.
