Australia fights on alone
NZPA staff correspondent Sydney New Zealand and the United States have been left out of a large annual defence exercise as Australia's Armed Forces go it alone for the first time. But while defence spokesmen in Canberra say that the A.N.Z.U.S. row between New Zealand and the United States is part of the reason why neither had been asked to take part in Kangaroo 86, the main factor was Australia’s determination to be able to handle threats itself. Last year’s Kangaroo exercise, which has traditionally involved personnel from all three A.N.Z.U.S. partners, was aborted after relations took a dive with the refusal by the New Zealand Government to allow a visit by the United States destroyer Buchanan.
