Vita staff fight lay-offs

PA Wellington More than 160 workers at an Upper Hutt foam plastics factory struck on Friday in support of workers who had been given redundancy notices. The workers, members of the Engineers' Union, formed a strike committee and assembled outside the main gate of Vita, N.Z., Ltd, on Friday morning. They said they had been given support by other unions, and expected workers at other Vita factories to strike as well. The workers said the company cited a downturn in economic activities in some of its markets as a reason for the redundancy, but workers said this was inconsistent with the fact that workers were still doing overtime and the company was employing new staff up until a few weeks ago.

The workers are unsure how many are affected by the redundancy, as they walked out after three were handed the notice.
