England totters to seventh defeat in row

NZPA-Reuter Leeds, England England’s batsmen yesterday crumbled before the Indian attack for the second time in two days in the second cricket test at Headingley and its seventh consecutive test defeat now seems imminent. At the close of play England, needing a huge 408 to win and avoid going down, 0-2, in the three-test series, was 90 for six in its second innings. On Saturday England crashed to 102 all out, its second-lowest home score against India, and yesterday India piled on the misery when it took its overnight score of 70 for five to 237 all out. The highlight of the Indian innings was the eleventh test century of Dilip Vengsarkar, who played the main role in putting India into a seemingly unassailable position. Vengsarkar scored an unbeaten 102 with some dazzling strokes after also top scoring with 61 in the first innings. He was well assisted by his captain, Kapil Dev, who hit a quick 31 while the Essex fast bowlers John Lever and Derek Pringle took four wickets each on a pitch on which batting was becoming progressively more difficult. The England collapse started when the opener, Graham Gooch, was caught off Kapil Dev for five. Five others swiftly

followed to a combination of seam and spin, leaving the beleaguered England captain, Mike Gatting, not out on 10 after taking 17 overs to get off the mark. “We are struggling again and I am very disappointed,” said Gatting.
