Delirious French fans celebrate
NZPA-Reuter Paris Thousands of delirious French soccer fans poured into central Paris last night and danced the samba down the Champs Elysees to celebrate their team’s win over Brazil in the quarter finals of the World Cup in Mexico. For two hours the French capital, basking in a heat wave, was a dead city as supporters watched the match on television. Within an hour of the French team’s win on penalties the celebrated boulevard was jammed with motorists and motor-cyclists blowing their horns. By midnight fans were standing on car roofs waving giant tricolour flags and chanting: “We’ve won.” Extra police were on duty but did not intervene. And in Guadalajara Brazilian fans reacted to their team’s defeat in traditional fashion by seeking consolation in the bars and restaurants. “I have taken more money in the past four hours, than I do in the course of a normal weekend,” said Manuel Ramirez, owner of the temporarily renamed “Bar Zico.” “I doubt if business could have been any better if it had been Brazil who won on penalties.” & More on World Cup—Page 27.
