Professional fees

Sir,—Recently you have published letters on fees charged by doctors. I am not at all sure that your correspondents are targeting the right group of professionals. My doctor charges me a moderate fee for consultations lasting up to 30 minutes on occasions, and makes a genuine attempt to improve the quality of my life. Compare this with a fee of $l2O charged by a lawyer for a simple consultation to explain a straightforward matter in an interview that lasted a little over half an hour. Perhaps the legal profession should also be subjected to public pressure, even allowing that lawyers may feel that they must charge exorbitant fees to compensate for the disdain in which their profession is generally held by the common man.—Yours, etc., J. W. TAYLOR. June 13, 1986.
