Surer out of danger

The Swiss Formula One Arrows driver, Marc Surer, who crashed his Ford RS2OO heavily in the German Hessen Rally, is still seriously ill in a German hospital, but his doctors says he is out of danger. Travelling at an estimated 225km/h, Surer’s RS2OO slid when almost flat out through a bend. It hit a small bush which launched it off the ground, engulfed in flames.

Surer and his co-driver, Michel Wyder, were pulled from the wreckage by rally officials, but Wyder died on the way to hospital. In the accident Surer suffered a broken leg, fractured hip and broken shoulder, as well as burns to his neck, arms and feet.

With such extensive injuries, it is unlikely that he will be fit to race again this year and so the Arrows team boss, Jackie Oliver, will have to find a

replacement driver for the remaining rounds in this year’s world championship Formula One series. Ayrton Senna, not the most popular of Formula One drivers, but certainly one of the quickest, has

not yet renewed his contract with Lotus for 1987. He recently had a threehour meeting with Enzo Ferrari and that has fuelled speculation that the Brazilian has made up his mind to join the Italian team next year.
