U.S. prison numbers up
NZPA-Reuter Washington The United States prison population increased 8.4 per cent in 1985 to a record 503,000 convicts, said the Bureau of Justice Statistics in a report. The addition last year of 33,074 inmates to the already bulging prisons represented the thirdlargest annual increase since the statistics were first collected in 1926. It was also the eleventh straight year that records were set for the number of prisoners in jail. The number of state and Federal inmates has risen 53 per cent since 1980, the report said.
