Lacovia wins French Oaks
NZPA-Reuter Paris The French filly Lacovia galloped her rivals into the ground with an easy success in the Prix de Diane (French Oaks) at Chantilly on Sunday. The odds-on favourite, the mount of Freddie Head, had two lengths to spare over Secret Form and jockey Gary Moore, who won the French Derby last week on Bering. A fast-finishing Galunpe, ridden by Alfred Gibert, was a neck away third, with the sole English challenger, Ivor’s Image, with the Epsom
Derby winning jockey, Walter Swinburn, aboard, half a length away in fourth place. Lacovia, trained by Francois Boutin, took up the running in the 14strong field two furlongs from home in the fourth French classic of the season.
Like Bering, once having hit the front, Lacovia never looked like being headed. The filly made a big impression on the huge crowd — and Princess Anne, who was in attendance to present the prize to the winning owner, the Geneva-based Mr Gerry Oldham.
