N.Z. croquet team wins comfortably
NZPA staff correspondent London The New Zealand croquet team needed only two days to beat Australia in its opening Macßobertson Shield match at Bowden, near Manchester yesterday. With three singles games to be played today, New Zealand holds an unbeatable 5-1 lead.
The contest’began well for the New Zealanders when Bob Jackson (Auckland) and Paul Skinley (Wellington) won the opening doubles match 26-0, 26-15.
Australia evened the score in a cliffhanger match that left Joseph Hogan (Gisborne) and Roger Murfitt (Canterbury) three points short in the third game. John Prince (Hastings) and Graham Beale (Canterbury) put their team back on top after recovering from 0-23 to win the first game 26-23 and again coming from behind to
win the second by the same margin.
There were fewer difficulties in yesterday’s singles, New Zealand winning all three matches in straight games. Both Hogan and Beale won their first games without conceding a point and Prince scored a triple peel in the second game to seal his victory. After today’s final three singles matches the squad will head south to Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, for its first encounter with Britain, the titleholders.
