Brazilian fans go home in disgust
NZPA-Reuter Guadalajara, Mexico An estimated 500 Brazilian World Cup fans have already packed up and gone home either through homesickness or disappointment and hundreds more seem set to join them. “I have followed the Brazilian team since the 1902 World Cup in Chile and I*ve never been so frustrated,” said Jose Americo, a 72-year-old retired civil servant. About 6000 Brazilian fans are in Mexico for the World Cup but pale victories over Spain and Algeria have dampened the enthusiasm of their usually noisy celebrations. “In Spain four years ago we would celebrate our victories by doing the samba in the streets,” said Americo. “Even rival fans would join in as happened with the Scottish supporters after we beat them, 4-1, in Seville. “But in Mexico, except for a few scattered groups of revellers, the Brazilian fans lack the enthusiasm of previous World Cups.” Luis Carlos Sousa Silveire is another disillusioned Brazilian follower. “I just don't know why I came. When the team is good, I forget about my family. After all, the World Cup only lasts a month,” he said, but this time, I’ve been here just 13 days and I feel homesick. “The team just doesn’t motivate me,” said Silveire, who is also packing his bags.
