Special correspondent Auckland While competition in the event for colts and geldings promises to be very keen, it will come as a big surprise if Bionic Chance does not make at Alexandra Park tomorrow evening, a one-horse race of the fillies’ lead-up race to next week’s $125,000 Two-year-old Championship.

Bionic Chance’s remarkable 1:58.7 at Alexandra Park on May 24 was not only a national mile record for a two-year-old pacer: It equalled the best by a three-year-old filly (Gina Rosa). Bionic Chance on that occasion beat most of the best youngsters in New Zealand when winning the Cigna Insurance Sires Stakes Final. She has nothing like the same opposition to contend with this time and, in spite of an awkward barrier draw, is bound to be at cramped odds. After the withdrawal of

Andrelita and Timely Boyden, Bionic Chance moves into no. 9. This is the inside position in the second row, so if no more horses drawn inside her are scratched, she will be right behind Ma Petite. Ma Petite finished well back in her only race so far. Even if she is unable to keep up, and so Bionic Chance is pushed back, it should not make any difference. Bionic Chance has such tremendous talent she should be able to give her moderate opposition a big start and still win. The issue in the colts and geldings’ event of the Benson and Hedges-spon-sored series is considerably more open. That’s That, which is regarded as the best Two-year-old in the South Island outside Bionic Chance, must have a great chance, especially as he has drawn No. 1. He has had only four races and he has won three of them. Two starts back, he set a New Zea-

land record for two-year-olds when he returned 2:32.7 for 2000 m at Addington on May 23. His defeat was by the Taupiri-trained Race Ruler in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes at Ashburton on May 31. Race Ruler also posted a national record for two-year-olds, 2400 m in 3:7.2. Race Ruler was unlucky enough to draw a secondrow barrier position in tomorrow’s race. With a reasonable passage, though, he looks sure to give a fine account of himself. That’s That apart, South Island horses in the field with strong claims are Emcee and Stormy Fella. Both gave fine performances last time out. Bogart Command is expected to be a firm favourite in the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the Air New Zealand Handicap Pace. His main opposition is likely to come from Xray and Springfield Countess.
