Some Bird impressive
Special correspondent Hastings Some Bird continued her preparation for the Manawatu meeting tomorrow with a solid 800 m gallop at Hastings yesterday. Fast work was carried out on the plough, where the ground was firm. Hardly any rain has fallen in Hawke’s Bay for over a month now and all the grass tracks are very firm. Some Bird ran a solo 800 m in 52.55, the last 600 m in 38.85. She looked
to have plenty in hand at the finish. Some Bird was an easy trials winner at Hastings on Tuesday and her owner-trainer, Roy McKendry, is hoping she will make a good showing in tomorrow’s Suburban handicap. The likelihood of a heavy track should enhance her chances. Time honours went to Padraic which sped over 800 m in 50.35, the last 600 m in 37.85. He is likely to be racing at the Hawke’s Bay meeting tomorrow week. Ragatan showed be has
taken no harm from his race at Awapuni last Saturday by running 600 m on his own in 37.95. He was only caught in the last few strides when third last week and could notch another win before long. Capone rounded off his preparation for the Manawatu meeting by running 600 m, with Bold Sika, in 38.15. A heavy track at Awapuni will be to Capone’s liking. Jack, an acceptor for the Rongotea Maiden at Awapuni, ran an easy 600 m in 39.15.
