Firearms control
Sir, —I would challenge G. T. Williams’ assertion (May 16) that a highly armed civilian population is a better guarantee of the civil process and is somehow necessary for the maintenance of civil order. The incidence of firearms-related crime — from domestic disputes to murder — would suggest exactly the opposite. What he seems to be suggesting is that if we arm people to the teeth then a state of civil order would prevail. Firearms are already in the wrong hands, which indicates that present legislation is inadequate and that further restrictions are necessary. — Yours, etc., M. CUNNEEN. May 19, 1986.
