New Zealand out to catch Americans
NZPA staff correspondent Washington
New Zealand will launches a tourist promotion in the United States this week-end indirectly aimed at American tourists who will not travel to Europe because of fear of terrorism. Americans in their thousands have turned away from Europe this northern summer season because they fear being a target for a terrorist attack and because of the declining value of the dollar against European currencies.
It has led to a surge in domestic tourism and to other parts of the world, including Australia and New Zealand.
The senior travel commissioner for New Zealand in North America, Mr David Chapman, said from Honolulu yesterday
that there was an agreement between foreign Government tourist offices in the United States that they would not take advantage of others’ misfortune. “Terrorism falls into that category,” he said. “However, there is nothing to stop us increasing awareness of New Zealand in the marketDI3C6 ” To try to get more United States travellers to travel to New Zealand
during what are mild winter months for many Americans, a campaign on the theme of “the climate is right for New Zealand” was being launched in seven market areas this week-end. The advertisements, to go in newspapers in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, two areas of Texas, San Francisco and San Diego, will also push the concept that the time is right and so is the price.
