Govt switch in livestock plan?
PA Wellington Farmers could hear this week whether the Government plans to change its controversial new system of valuing and taxing livestock, the “Dominion” newspaper reports. The reforms to the standard values scheme
drew an outcry from the farm lobby when they emerged in the Government’s December economic statement. A committee appointed to hear submissions from the public on the Government’s White Paper has delivered its report to the Minister of Finance, Mr Douglas, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, and the Minister of Forests, Mr Wetere. A spokesman for Mr Douglas’ office said the Government was likely to make an announcement on the report this week, after - the Ministers had discussed it with officials. The committee’s chairman, Dr Don Brash, said yesterday there were 1080 submissions, not counting duplications by some groups.
Dr Brash said this high number reflected the level of farmer concern about the new regime.
