Race against time

Hot on the heels of Live Aid comes Sport Aid, Bob Geldof and Unicef’s latest aid for Africa project. . . The theme for the world-wide event is “The Race Against Time,” and at midday on May 17, a lone African runner will leave a relief camp in Africa, carrying a symbolic message of hope in a burning charcoal ember, held aloft in an Olympic torch. Over seven days he will cross, Europe, then light the Sport Aid Flame at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York.

As he lights the flame, millions of people throughout the world will start running for Africa — in New Zealand it will be at 4 a.m. on May 25. During the week of May 18-25 special sporting events will be held across the world. Top sportsmen and women will be among those taking sooner, ice hockey, golf, tennis, athletics, snooker,

ice skating, motor sports, swimming, hockey, cricket, cycling, squash, volleyball, handball, basketball, gymnastics, water sports, archery, winter sports, badminton,

martial arts and table tennis. Christchurch’s contribution will include a 10km 4 a.m. fun run, on May 25. The course has yet to be decided.
