Downtown Cinema
A welcome addition to Christchurch’s everdwindling number of cinemas is the Downtown, which will open today at 241 High Street, above the Echo Records shop. This tiny, 100-seater is intended as an outlet for the ever-increasing back-' log of films which are never seen in Christchurch because of the limited number of outlets for them. “We mainly intend to present mainstream films, but of the kind the big cinema chains did not consider sufficiently commercial to warrant a release,” said a spokesman for the new cinema. “About 425 films were released in the United States last year, of which
we only saw about 200 — if we were lucky. “Being only a small cinema, we do not expect to be considered as a major threat by the cinema chains, and we should have easy access to such films,” he said. The Downtown will open today with “Eddie Macon Run,” about a wrongly convicted prisoner (John Schneider) who is trying to elude his relentless pursuer (Kirk Douglas) while attempting to cross the border to Mexico. Screenings will be given today at 6 and 8 p.m.; on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 2,4, 6 and 8 p.m.; and Monday to Thursday at 6 and 8 p.m.
