‘Spider Woman’
“Kiss of the Spider Woman,” which will start at the Savoy today, is a subtly balanced story involving two prisoners who share a cell in a South American prison. One is played by William Hurt, who won this year’s Oscar for best actor for his portrayal of Molina, a homosexual convicted on a morals charge. The other is Valentin (Raul Julia), a man incarcerated for his revolutionary anti-fascist beliefs. The film is essentially a conflict of ideals — about
feelings in which the political prisoner must learn to shed his preconceptions about his cellmate. Directed by Hector Babenco, the maker of the critically acclaimed “Pixote,” “Kiss of the Spider Woman” is the first Brazilian-made film to star two American actors — Hurt and Julia. It also stars Brazil’s own Sonia Braga, whose uninhibited sexiness on the screen has won her the reputation of the Marilyn Monroe of South America.
