Distress flare mystery
The source of two red distress flares 18 kilometres south-east of the Kaikoura peninsula remained a mystery to the police last evening. The vessel Coastal Trader had sighted the flares off the coast about, 6.30 p.m. and headed to the area, a police spokesman said. As she got hearer, the ship saw a fishing trawler with its lights on. The spokesman said that as the Coastal Trader got closer, the trawler turned all its lights off and “steamed off in a northerly direction.” The trawler did not answer any radio calls and late last evening had not been identified. “The sea is calm and there are no boats overdue and so we are not sure of the reason why the flares were set off,” the spokesman said.
