$34,000 for pest control

Lincoln College has been awarded grants of more than $34,090 to find ways of controlling scale insect pests on export fruit while minimising pesticide residue in the fruit The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has provided one three-year contract worth $24,000, and Ivon Watkins-Dow has provided another of $10,050. There are three significant scale insects found on export fruit: greedy scale, oystershell scale, and San Jose Scale. They can all cause quarantine problems for export fruit, as they debilitate fruit trees. At present insecticides are used to control the pests, but it is thought that the insects may develop resistance to the chemi- • cals. , The research aims to find new insecticides and control methods.
