AUSTRALIA Slightly firmer close

NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed slightly firmer as solid buying in BHP and bargain hunting in mining stocks offset profit taking in the industrial sector, brokers said. Near the close, the allordinaries index had climbed 0.3 points from Tuesday's close to 1206.9 after falling to a 1204.7 low in earlier business. The all-industrials ended 5.6 down at 1967.5, while the all-resources gained 4.4 to 632.4. The gold index dropped 11.3 to 901.1. National turnover was 70.5 M shares worth sAustlo9.oM, with falls outnumbering rises 272 to 234. BHP gained 8c in the first hour and closd 10c higher at 744 on market speculation' that John Spalvin’s Adsteam may lift its stake in BHP by about 15 per cent. Adsteam shed 15c to 1335 while BHP ally Elders IXL also lost 15c to 435. Bell Resources, which said it may increase the offer price for BHP, gained 10c to 430 while the Bell Group lost 10c to 790. CRA gained 2c to 666 after peaking at 672, and CSR rose 4c to 322. Profit-taking continued in the industrial sector, although there was evidence of renewed buying interest. Orbital engine manufacturer Sarich lost 50c to 1200, Westfield the same to 2200, Lend Lease 14c to 936 and Brambles 12c to 684. FAI closed steady at 760 after falling to 730, Ariadne gained 14c to 285 and North BH 6c to 212. NZI closed steady at 150 after peaking at 155 on turnover of 10.4 million shares, including a special of 9.9 M at 160. Winterbottom lost 1c to 34 inspite of a special of 4.0 M shares. Banks finished firmer on balance. Westpac led the field with a 6c rise to 622,

followed by the ANZ, up 2c to 620, and the National, down 2c to 642.
