Footballers ‘should not be victimised’

PA Wellington The 30 “rebel” All Blacks in South Africa should not be “victimised” by the New Zealand Rugby Union, says Mr Pat Hunt, national spokesman for the Society for the Promotion of the Rights of the Individual. Mr Hunt said the rebel rugby players had given the Rugby Union a way out of the “legal impasse” which denied the union

the right to send rugby teams to South Africa. “In bypassing the Casey injuction, they should be treated with special consideration and not victimised,” said Mr Hunt. The actions of the Auckland Rugby Union and nine other unions “in calling for the players’ blood” was an unfortunate reaction, and wiser heads should prevail, said Mr Hunt.
