Batty sees tour as a setback
PA Tauranga A former All Black, Grant Batty, says he can understand why the “rebel” rugby players have gone to South Africa but doubts whether they should be there. Batty, an All Black to South Africa on the last official tour in 1976, believes the “rebel” tour could signal another setback to rugby in New Zealand. “The sport has gone through an unfortunate
period recently with its image since the Springbok tour and then the injury problems,” he said. “I believed the image of the game was just starting to swing back into favour when this tour happened. “It may mean another setback for rugby in New Zealand.” Batty said he could understand why players wanted to play against the Springboks because most considered it the pinnacle of a playing career.
