N.Z. runner second

NZPA staff correspondent London Mary O’Connor, of Christchurch, repeated her 1983 second behind the Norwegian, Grete Waitz, in the women’s event at the London marathon on Sunday. Waitz succeeded yet again in the twilight of her remarkable career while O'Connor, aged 31, followed her home in 2h 30min at a rain-swept Westminster. Waitz’s unofficial time was 2:24:54. Finishing in the shadow of Big Ben, the New Zealander’s time was two minutes slower

than when she trailed the Norwegian three years ago. Last year she was fifth woman in the London marathon with a time of 2:32. First home in the field of about 19,000 runners was the favourite, Toshihiko Seko of Japan. He set out at a hot pace but slowed under the strain towards the end and finished in a slower than expected 2:10:02. England’s Hugh Jones was second in 2:11:42 and Scotland’s Allister Hutton third in 2:12:36.
