Ruapuna season ends

The Canterbury Car Club held its final meeting of the season at Ruapuna Park on Sunday with events for karts, motorcycles, club saloons, Mini 7s, Formula Ford and sports cars. Feature events were the Select Autos Mini 7 championship and the South Island Formula Ford and sports car championship, both of which were into their final rounds.

With Allen Milligan leading Stephen Jones by only one point, it was

obviousl/ going to be a battle between these two Christchiirch drivers for the championship and this proved! to be the case. A spij. on the first lap by Doug Drake and Robin Herran . allowed Peter Black’s Motors Mini and Warner Collins (Butlef'Auto Spares) to join the leaders in a break on the! field of 17. AgOod battle for fifth place , ended for Robin Wilkinson when his Canterbury car got shortened on the hairpin wall aid this put him out for the rest of the day. The Six laps ended with Jones, Milligan, Black and Collins 'taking the first four places. In the final race, Milligan’s Charisma Waterbeds Mini charged into the lead, closely attended by Collins, Jones and Milton Souster but Souster went off the track, following Black to get up to fourth. Jones passed Milligan and Collins to take the lead at the hairpin, so winning the Select Autos Mini 71 Championship, 10 pointy clear of Milligan

with Collins third. In Race One of the South Island Formula Ford and Sports Car Series the Palmerston North driver, Debbie Lester, drove the Andy McElree Reynard. Chris Hyde filled the pole position in his PDL/ Goldair GLH.

Going into the hairpin for the first time, Paul Larsen took the lead and he left Alan Jones, Lester, Jeff Pascoe and Hyde in his wake.

Pascoe took Lester on the inside at the hairpin on lap four and Jones at the Lancaster curve. He took the lead when Hyde spun off at Avon City Ford bend, and went on to lead Lester and Jones to the finish.

In Race Two Andy McElree, back in the BMC Transmission Services Reynard, competed with Hyde for the lead from the start which ended where Hyde spun out, and this left McElree with an easy drive to finish first in the race and take the South Island Formula Ford Championship, cfe F
