Indoor hockey to Canterbury University teams
University won its thirteenth Canterbury division one Indoor hockey championship, in 14 years when it beat Liquorland Harewood, 6-2, la the : 1986 final of the 5.1.M.U.-spoh-sored competition at Canterbury Court yesterday.
There was never much doubt that University would win. It slipped to a 3-0 lead in the first 6min before Harewood had a chance to wake up, and throughout the game it showed superior control and better combination on attack. John Christensen and Barry Maister, long retired from the outdoor game, played a significant part in University’s success. They scored all six goals between them, but their passing, running off the ball and dribbling were an inspiration to the other three field players,
Greg Pierce, Mark and Peter Tynan. Harewood fought back to 2-3 lOmin into the first half but half-a-minute later University re-estab-lished a two-goal lead which it held to the interval at 15min.
University scored twice more in the second half, but was more intent on maintaining possession and holding its comfortable lead. Carlton caused a minor surprise by winning the women’s division one title, 4-2, against Bumside. Carlton was without three leading players — Cathy Thompson, Kathy Paterson and Pat Barwick — all of whom are in Australia with the New Zealand team. Burnside failed to realise the value jof passing. Too many of its players tried to take on the Carl-
ton defence singlehanded.-. By contrast the Carlton players combined effortlessly and its four goals were the result of crisp, passing moves. Shirley Haig led Carlton by example. Her passing was accurate and her trapping safe. She had an excellent ally in Mary Devine and in goal Lesley Murdoch blocked a number of shots.
