Miramar takes soccer lead
National Mutual Miramar established a two-point break at the top of the Rothmans Soccer League table with a convincing fourth-round win in Nelson yesterday. Two goals by the outstanding striker, Greg Brown, paved the way for Miramar’s 3-0 win over McKee Nelson United. The other Wellington side, and defending champion, DB Wellington, had to come from behind to share the points in Gisborne. Both goals came from the penalty spot. Majic Carpet Manurewa made two places up the ladder with a surprise win against Masport Mount Wellington, while Hani-mex-North Shore, after trailing early in the match, sneaked home, 2-1, in Dunedin. The national under-19 representative, Darren McClennan, scored his third goal in this, his first national league season. Landbase Papatoetoe got its first point of the season at Palmerston North, thanks to a Bill McClure penalty. Another penalty, by Christchurch Brother United’s captain, Keith Braithwaite, was not enough to save it from a 2-1 defeat against University Cowan in Auckland.
