Champion bred in N.Z.

From

G. K. YULE

Brisbane

Village Kid was bred In New Zealand, being by the Fallacy horse, Gramatan, a good winner himself and a sucessful sire considering his lack of opportunities. Gramatan is to stand at a Queensland stud at a fee of $lOOO next spring. Village Kid has now had 57 starts for 37 wins, 13 placings and $790,412 in stakes. Next season could see him join Gammalite, the only other millionaire pacer in Australia or New Zealand. Horn and Cox race the five-year-old in partnership with their wives.

Cox, who was as thrilled as Horn and Lewis with their success, later drew the writer aside and said: “I’d like to put the record straight

about the purchase of Village Kid,” and produced the bill of sale, which showed that the cost of landing him in Australia was just under SNZ4B,OOO. “That was the price of $40,000 plus commission to the agent It was I who bought him and I gave Bill his halfshare in January, 1985. The official records will confirm that,” said Cox.

New Zealanders were reasonably confident that their representative, Master Mood, would get some of the stake when Kevin Williams got him out well and settled him one off the fence with cover. He tried to improve inside the last 600 m when Bag Limit tired in front of him, but he was well beaten turning for home. “He was travelling really well until inside

the last half and 'even though he tried hard he couldn’t muster any more. I just lacked horse power,” said Williams. “What did you think of that for a trial for Christrchurch next year?” said Anne James with a laugh after, she had driven Vanderport into second place.

“What a thrill even though he didn’t win. He kept fighting right to the wire and don’t forget he’s only four,” she added. Game Oro might have been unlucky not to have finished clbser than sixth. He was checked early in ah incident found to have been caused by Kevin Williams allowing Master Mood to crowd Stylish Guy, which in turn went down onto Game Oro. Williams was fined $2OO for his lapse.
