Training for tutors in Chch
South Island technical institute tutors no longer have to go to Wellington for training. This year, the system for training tutors has been decentralised, and a centre set up at the Christchurch Polytechnic. It is hoped this will save money in travelling costs.
The centre has three full-time tutorial staff, and a head of staff, Mrs Colleen Mills. It is responsible for running the 12week courses which each newly employed tutor must attend. The courses are run in two-week blocks throughout the year. This year, the centre has budgeted for 692 tutor places, many tutors attending more than one two-week block. Mrs Mills said the centre had been well received by tutors, who regarded it as a regional facility and not just for Christchurch. The;centre serves Nelson Polytechnic, Southland Community College, Otago Polytechnic, South Canterbury Community College, and Christchurch Polytechnic.
