Women’s golf sound named
Four members of the Canterbury team which finished fifth in last year’s Stylemaster national women’s golf tournament have been named in a preliminary squad of eight for this year’s event, to be contested at Taupo in May. The eight golfers named yesterday by the convener of the Canterbury women’s selection panel, Mrs Betty Fraser, will compete in the inaugural four-district round robin tournament in Oamaru on April 5-6. The squad is: Adrienne Bond, Jeanette Ross (both Russley), Diana Bristol, Diane Woodhouse (Waitikiri), Rachel Buxton, Liz Douglas, Jane Reese and Mary Sparrow (Christchurch). For the round-robin competition against Southland, Otago and Mid-South Canterbury, a travelling reserve will be named. The five women to represent Canterbury in the Stylemaster tournament,
along with one reserve, will be announced at the end of the provincial 54hole stroke championship, which begins at Waitiklri on Tuesday. Canterbury’s playing order at the Mount Denby course, in Whangarei last year was Douglas, Bond, Sparrow, Ross and Lynley Watts, who has left Christchurch. The travelling reserve was Reese, one of Canterbury’s most talented young players. Bristol, a former Manawatu-Wanganui Russell Grace representative, is a player of distinct promise and was equal second after the first round of “The Press” invitation tournament last month. Buxton won the South Island junior match play title at Kaiapoi in January. The round-robin tournament should provide solid preparation for the national championship, which is being contested on the Centennial course in Taupo, starting on May 4. '
