Yacht victory

NZPA staff correspondent London Pierre Fehlmann’s ÜBS Switzerland scored another clear triumph in the Whitbread round-the-world yacht race yesterday, well ahead as she raced across the third leg finish line at Punta del Este, Uruguay. Flying a white spinnaker in 25 knot winds, the Swiss maxi beat her nearest rivals by the best part of a day. She also outstripped the few spectator craft while heading at 12 knots into the fashionable South American holiday town to be greeted by a crowd of about 1000 people, according to race headquarters in Portsmouth. ÜBS arrived at 11 minutes after midnight New Zealand time, an estimated 29 hours ahead of the New Zealand entry, Peter Blake’s Lion New Zealand, back in fifth place. Lion’s arrival time was put at 5 a.m. this morning (N.Z. time).
