Top local drivers in S. Island squad
Five of Christchurch’s leading O.S.C.A. drivers will represent the South Island against their North Island Sports Sedan counterparts in their annual inter- island clash at Manfeild autocourse, Fielding, this Sunday.
The Southern team will comprise Trevor Crowe (Starlet Olds), John Osborne (Mazda Chev), Rob Kennard (Cortina V 8), lan Munt and John Fisher (both Capri Che vs). Although the North Island lineup has yet to be announced, it is likely to include such luminaries as Wayne Huxford and Graeme Addis.
Last year’s inaugural encounter saw the south Island team run out easy winners, but this Sunday’s event is likely to see the
more liberally regulated North Island cars provide a much stiffer challenge. The South Island team, weakened by the withdrawal of Avon Hyde’s O.S.C.A. Championshipleading Commodore Chev, will be looking for a strong performance from Crowe’s latest Starlet VB, which has proven fast but fragile to date this season.
Osborne and Munt should provide a solid backup, although both Kennard and Fisher will be making their first appearances at the circuit. Sunday’s meeting will also include the running af the prestigious Dan Higgins Trophy for Formula Fords, and the opening round of the new Shellsport manufacturers championship.
