Baby killed by rifle shot
PA Palmerston North The police are treating the death of a baby boy, aged 11 months, near Woodville on Wednesday as homicide.
Detective Inspector George Wood, head of the C. 1.8. in Palmerston North, said the child died instantly about 5.30 p.m. after being struck by-a bullet from a .308 rifle.
The shot was allegedly fired by a boy, aged 14, a distant relative of the
dead child. Mr Wood declined to name the child because he said it would lead to the identity of the teenager.
Seven police from Palmerston North, Woodville and Pahiatua are working on the case. There was one other boy in the farmhouse at the time.
Mr Wood said a Pahiatua Coroner was investigating the cause of death.
