Timaru wool sought
Timaru wool sold reasonably well at the end of a combined Invercargill and Timaru wool sale in Christchurch yesterday during which the clearance to the trade varied considerably. At the end of the day the Wool Board had been required to bid on 33 per cent of the total offering and had sold or passed to it 17 per cent At times during the Invercargill offering the board’s activity was considerably above this level. The poorer-style wool was heavily discounted by buyers and the board had to take it
In the small Timaru offering of 6080 bales the board was almost inactive and exporters competed keenly for a mixed bag of fine and crossbred fleece and lambs’ wool.
The market indicator for the day, combining both the Christchurch and Wellington sales, was 344 c greasy, up 1c from the Dunedin sale of February 21.
At the top of the small Timaru offering was eight bales of fine merino from Clent Hills Partnership (Mt Somers) which made 599 c (64.9) followed by 12 bales of fine Merino wether from J. G. Whyte (Mt Somers) which made 538 c (63.0) and another
four bales of fine Halfbred f ° Guide HiU 9> station (Lake Tekapo) sold two fine Quarterbred for (712) and eight bales for 450 c (64.9). Walrnai Partnership (Ikawai) sold 13 bales ; of Corriedale fleece for 380 c (72.8). A J. and L J- Lowry (Mayfield) sold 15 bales of crossbred for 385 c (79.1), LI Topham (Ashburton) sold eight bales of Romney shore hogget for 383 c (84.9), and I. L and p. L. Mehrtens (Waimate) 11 bales of crossbred for 381 c (78.4).
Perendale wool topped 393 c (78.0) for 26 bales from C. G. and B. A. Clelland (Totara Valley) and Coopworth wool peaked at 379 c (83.1) for B. R. Petrie (Asburton) who sold 14 bales; I. J. Morrison (Albury) s»ld 29 bales for 373 c (77.7) and Spreadeagle Farm (Ashburton) 19 bales at 373 c (80.1). At the top of the secondshear was 12 bales of Romney from Langley Downs Partnership (Pleasant Point) which made 420 c (85.3) followed by 11 bales of Perendale from Chisholm Brothers (Geraldine) at 413 (83.3), 18 bales of crossbred from B. J. Westgarth (Cave) at 413 c (83.0) and 15 bales of
English Leicester from Wainui station (Kurow) at 410 c (80.3). Five bales of Perendale lambs’ wool from the estate of L A Barrett (Albury) sold for 437 c (83.7), 10 bales of Border Merino lamb from J. G. Yeatman (Ashburton) made 421 c (79.6). Four bales of Perendale brought 416 c (84.3) for A B. Rogers (Cave). R. K. Clelland (Hazelburn) sold 11 bales of Perendale for 410 c (85.3) and the same price (86.0) was received by Willara Farm, Ltd (Taiko) fpr six bales. J. M. and D. Smith (Geraldine) sold 10 bales of Crossbred lambs’ wool for 405 c (84.2), D. J. White (Waimate) received 404 c (83.8) for 11 bales of Coopworth lambs, RC. H. Elworthy (Holme station) received 398 c (83.1) for fine crossbred in .five bales, Langley Downs Partnership (Pleasant Point) sold 14 bales of Romney lambs’ for 394 c (84.7) and R. E. and B. A. Blair (Ashburton) sold four bales of poopworth lambs’ for 392 c (83.8). The order of the Timaru sale was Wrightson N.M.A., 194 lots, 2158 bales; Pyne, Gould, Guinness, 127 lots, 1388 bales; Dalgety Crown, 193 lots, 2534 bales; Total 514 lots, 6080 bales.
