Communism
Sir, —One wonders how many of those who build up a head of hate against Marxism or communism have ever asked themselves what its message must contain to attract billions of people to its beliefs; more than the total number of adherents to Christianity or Islam put together. Force alone cannot account for its spread. Those who had empty bellies and no human rights before communism at least now have full bellies, and having them can strive for the acquisitipn of the other rights, though this does not happen overnight. It took nearly 20 centuries for countries of the Christian West to acquire them, and there is still even doubt whether the emphasis on individual rights has gone too far for the general good. However, as long as the West holds fast to its ideals of the past and forms new ones for the future, it has nothing to fear from communism.—Yours, etc., VERNON WILKINSON. February 24, 1986.
